Peso da Regua visit, district meeting and transfers!

On Monday, July 25th we went with Elder Williams and Quarnberg to visit Peso da Regua. This is a pretty city, of about 20,000 people located on the Douro river 25 minutes from us.

This road was closed due to the filming of Fast and Furious 10.

This is one of the most beautiful landscaped valleys we have seen so far!

On Wednesday we had district meeting in Braganca.

Elder Alvey is riding in the trunk.

Elder Blackhurst and Quarnberg on the left were transferred this week.

We visited sweet sister Fernanda and Isidro Silva. They do not have a car and live in an isolated area about 20 minutes from Vila Real. She loves to cook for the missionaries and have visitors as she cares for her husband and lives an isolated life.

A tradition when leaving an area is to give a tie with your name badge to someone special. This was given to sister Fernanda.

Our final photo with Elder Quarnberg.

Farewell meal for elder Quarnberg with Fabio and Juliana Santos who have just arrived from Brazil.

We had to make a final visit to our favorite bakery-Casa Lapao. Elder Williams makes the best chocolate chip cookies in all Portugal! Fortunately we brought a 4 pound bag of chocolate chips that we have been sharing with him in exchange for some of his cookies.

On Friday, July 29th was transfers and Elder Quarnberg has moved on and his replacement is Elder Madrid from St. George, Utah. Elder Madrid with President Hugo and Elder Williams.

Elder Madrid arrived at 9PM on Friday and before going to his apartment came to Church where a  meeting was just ending with pizza for all!

                                              SCRIPTURE POWER

Sometimes we are warned and other times we are not. Sometimes we may be able to avoid  being taken and bound and other times we maybe required to suffer.  “thus we see that the Lord worketh in many ways to the salvation of his people.” (Alma 24:27)

Consider these experiences of Alma and Nephi.

First Alma:

“Now Alma, having been warned of the Lord that the armies of king Noah would come upon them, and having made it known to his people, therefore they gathered together their flocks, and took of their grain, and departed into the wilderness before the armies of king Noah. And the Lord did strengthen them, that the people of king Noah could not overtake them to destroy them.” (Mosiah 23:1-2; 18:34)

Alma with authority baptizes and organizes a group of about 450 into the church of Christ. He teaches them “that there should be no contention..having their hearts knit together in unity and in love towards another.” (Mosiah 18:21) “Thus did Alma teach every man should love his neighbor as himself, that there should be no contention among them.” (Mosiah 23:15) “did nourish them with things pertaining to righteousness” (Mosiah 23:18)

They “prosper exceedingly” and build the city of Helam. However, without being warned an army of Lamanites comes into their land “Alma and his brethren delivered themselves up into their hands; and the Lamanites took possession of the land of Helam.” (Mosiah 23:29) Amulon, a former wicked priest of King Noah who would have urged the execution of Abinadi  is appointed king over them. He persecutes Alma and does “cause that his children should persecute their children” (Mosiah 24:8-11) He threatens execution if anyone is found praying.

How would Alma and the members of the “church of Christ” (Mosiah 18:17) feel toward God?  Why was Alma warned at the waters of Mormon when they dwelt in tents but not warned after they had built a city and were living righteously? They escape from King Noah only to build a city and have the king of the Lamanites appoint wicked Amulon as their king in Helam. (Mosiah 23:39)

The answer was to help them develop increased patience and faith.

“Nevertheless the Lord seeth fit to chasten his people; yea, he trieth their patience and their faith. Nevertheless—whosoever putteth his trust in him the same shall be lifted up at the last day. Yea, and thus it was with this people. For behold, I will show unto you that they were brought into bondage, and none could deliver them but the Lord their God,... And it came to pass that he did deliver them, and he did show forth his mighty power unto them, and great were their rejoicings.” (Mosiah 23: 21-24)

After Alma and  the people of the Lord “did submit cheerfully and with patience to all the will of the Lord.” (Mosiah 24:15) “so great was their faith and their patience that the voice of the Lord came unto them again, saying: Be of good comfort, for on the morrow I will deliver you our of bondage” (Mosiah 24:16) The Lord causes a deep sleep to come upon the Lamanites, they escape and travel all day, and in the valley of Alma “all their men and all their women and all their children that could speak lifted their voices in the praises of their God” (Mosiah 24:22) Once again they are warned. “And now the Lord said unto Alma: Haste thee and get thou and this people out of this land” (Mosiah 24:23)

Sometimes we are warned and other times we are not.

Now Nephi:

On 4 separate occasions Nephi’s older brothers Laman and Lemuel are so angry at him that they attempt to kill him. (1 Ne. 7:16; 1 Ne. 16:37; 1 Ne. 17:48; 2 Ne. 5:2-4)

The first attempt Nephi describes : “they were angry with me..they did lay their hands upon me…and did bind me with cords, for they sought to take away my life” (1 Ne. 7:16) Nephi prayers to: “give me strength that I may burst these bands”. Instead his prayer is answered as “the bands were loosed from off my hands and feet” (1 Ne. 7:17-18)

The 3rd attempt on his life was when Nephi was commanded to build a ship.  “and were desirous to throw me into the depths of the sea; and as they came forth to lay their hands upon me I spake unto them, saying: In the name of the Almighty God, I command you that ye touch me not,…and whoso shall lay his hands upon me shall wither even as a dried reed;…for God shall smite him….they were confounded and could not contend against me; neither durst they lay their hands upon me nor touch me with their fingers, even for the space of many days… And it came to pass that the Lord said unto me: Stretch forth thine hand again unto thy brethren, and they shall not wither before thee, but I will shock them, [IE cause to shake or tremble] saith the Lord, and this will I do, that they may know that I am the Lord their God.  And it came to pass that I stretched forth my hand unto my brethren, and they did not wither before me; but the Lord did shake them, even according to the word which he had spoken. And now, they said: We know of a surety that the Lord is with thee, for we know that it is the power of the Lord that has shaken us. And they fell down before me, and were about to worship me,” (1 Ne. 17: 48-55)

Imagine the power Nephi felt. His brothers who are angry at him again come to lay their hands on him with the intent to kill him by throwing him into the sea. However, this time he commands them to not touch him or God will smite them and they will wither as a dried reed. They are confounded and won’t even touch him with their fingers. Many days go by and he is told to stretch forth his hand and God will shake them. He stretches forth his hand they are shaken physically and they  recognize that Nephi has the power of God, they fall down before him and are about to worship him. (1 Ne. 17:48-55)  That would have been a very powerful and miraculous experience. Previously, they lay their hands upon him and bind him with cords now they wont even touch him with their fingers.

Not long after this the ship is built and they are at sea when Laman and Lemuel “were angry with me,…and did take me and bind me with cords, and they did treat me with much harshness; nevertheless, the Lord did suffer it..” (1 Ne. 18:11) After being bound for 4 days and “my wife with her tears and prayers, and also my children, did not soften the hearts of my brethren” (1 Ne. 18:19) Nephi’s ankles and wrists “had swollen exceedingly..and great was the soreness thereof. Nevertheless, I did look unto my God, and I did praise him all the day long; and I did not murmur against the Lord because of mine afflictions.” (1 Ne. 18:15-16)

Imagine the trust it would take to have successfully experienced commanding his brothers “In the name of the Almighty God” to not touch him but now to recognize that the Lord’s will was that “they bound me insomuch that I could not move” (1 Ne. 18:12)  and suffer for days “that he might show forth his power” (1 Ne. 18:11)

“For every Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego who are saved from the flames (Daniel 3), an Abinadi is allowed to burn (Mosiah 17). For every wayward Alma the Younger that is brought to the light from a pleading, faithful parent (Mosiah 27), a Laman and Lemuel continue to stray (1 Nephi). For every 2,000 stripling warriors who leave the battle with nothing more than wounds (Alma 56:56), 1,005 are left to be slain by the sword (Alma 24:22). For every Ammon who brings thousands of souls to repentance (Alma 26:22), a Mormon and Moroni labor all the days of their life and never see the fruits of their labor (Moroni 9:6). For every blind to see, deaf to hear, and lame to walk (Matthew 11:5), the experience of unfathomable suffering awaits in Gethsemane (Matthew 26). However, For every Abinadi who is burned, sometimes an Alma takes the doctrine to heart and begins a lifetime in service to God (Mosiah 17). For every 1,005 who are left to be slain, sometimes we see ‘the Lord worketh in many ways to the salvation of his people' as more souls are brought to repentance than the number who perished (Alma 24:27). For every ‘thy will be done' in submission to the agony of Gethsemane (see Matthew 26:39), there is a prayer too beautiful to be recorded, the blessing of children one by one, angels descending from the opened heavens, and tears streaming down the face from One who can finally declare full joy (3 Nephi 17).” (Bruce and Marie Hafen— “Faith Is Not Blind”.)

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5) The witness only comes “after the trial of your faith” (Ether 12:6)

Ukrainian refugees, English class & YA activity on Mirandela River Beach!

This week through a number of tender mercies/miracles we visited a Ukrainian refugee family. The mother  and her 2 daughters live in Murca a city 25 minutes away from Vila Real. Last week the missionaries in Vila Real changed their normal routine and went to a small grocery store during their lunch. While there the mother recognized the missionaries and introduced herself. The family are members and have lived in Portugal since March, 2022 when they escaped from Ukraine. They have had no contact with the Church during this time. She is learning Portuguese but speaks pretty good English. On Wednesday, July 20th we took lunch and visited this family.

The mother Nadiia  is 38 years old, Anastasia is almost 15 and Maria is almost10.

The mother gave Kim this bag she had brought with her from Ukraine.
The city of Murca has a population of about 6,000. They agreed to house 2 Ukrainian refugee families so they cleaned, painted and furnished 2 apartments in this building named “Holy House of Mercy”. These families have lived there rent free since March, 2022.

This is a photo of the entire Vila Real Branch library.
Imagine the excitement when the missionaries found a Book of Mormon in Ukrainian!!

What are the chances of a Book of Mormon in Ukrainian being in a small library in Portugal! It happened! Here is the photo.

This is a photo of a text from the Dad who remains in Ukraine.

New record for English class, 18 + missionaries!

YA activity on Saturday, July 23rd at Mirandela River Beach. 15 YA + 4 missionaries.

On Sunday, we attended the Mirandela Group for the 1st time. 4 in attendance!
Beautiful Kim and beautiful flowers

                                  SCRIPTURE POWER

King Benjamin begins his powerful discourse by asking all to “open your ears that ye may hear, and your hearts that ye may understand, and your minds that the mysteries of God may be unfolded to your view (Mosiah 2:9) Our ears, hearts and minds need to be open to comprehend the mysteries of God.

Interesting that understanding is associated with our hearts. Abinadi who was martyred about 25 years before  King Benjamin’s discourse said: “Ye have not applied your hearts to understanding; therefore, ye have not been wise.” (Mosiah 12:27) Jacob reminds us: “O be wise; what can I say more?” (Jac. 6:12)

Satan wants our hearts!

the author of all sin…doth carry on his works of darkness…from generation to generation according as he can get hold upon the hearts of the children of men.” (Hel. 6:30)  “the devil  has got so great hold upon your hearts.” (Hel. 7:15)

One of his most successful means is when we set our hearts upon riches and vain things. “..they began to set their hearts upon their riches” (Hel. 6:17) “ye have set your hearts upon the riches and the vain things of this world” (Hel. 7:21) “..how quick to hearken unto the words of the evil one, and to set their hearts upon the vain things of the world!” (Hel. 12:4) “they saw and beheld with great sorrow that the people of the church began to be lifted up in the pride of their eyes, and to set their hearts upon riches and upon the vain things of the world” (Alma 4:8) “Now the cause of this iniquity of the people was this—Satan had great power, unto the stirring up of the people to do all manner of iniquity, and to the puffing them up with pride, tempting them to seek for power, and authority, and riches, and the vain things of the world. And thus Satan did lead away the hearts of the people to do all manner of iniquity; therefore they had enjoyed peace but a few years.“ (3 Ne. 6: 15-16)

Jesus explained: “And ye shall offer up unto me no more the shedding of blood; yea, your sacrifices and your burnt offerings shall be done away, for I will accept none of your sacrifices and your burnt offerings. And ye shall offer for a sacrifice unto me a broken heart and a contrite spirit” (3 Ne. 9:19-20)

Gospel Topics-Sacrifice: “To have a broken heart and a contrite spirit is to be humble and receptive to the will of God and to the counsel of those He has called to lead His Church. It also means to feel deep sorrow for sin and a sincere desire to repent. The prophet Lehi emphasized the importance of offering this sacrifice: “Behold, [Christ] offereth himself a sacrifice for sin, to answer the ends of the law, unto all those who have a broken heart and a contrite spirit; and unto none else can the ends of the law be answered” (2 Nephi 2:7). Those who show their willingness to sacrifice as the Lord has commanded will be accepted by Him. He taught: “All … who know their hearts are honest, and are broken, and their spirits contrite, and are willing to observe their covenants by sacrifice—yea, every sacrifice which I, the Lord, shall command—they are accepted of me” (Doctrine and Covenants 97:8).

My experience is that the best way to ensure that our hearts are not placed on riches and the vain things of this world is when we sacrifice our time, come out of the world and attend the temple with a broken heart.

Elder Neal A. Maxwell said: “We are often actually less generous with our time than with our money. We keep forgetting where our time comes from!” — (All These Things Shall Give Thee Experience)

Without regular temple attendance pride can grow from day to day.

“Exceedingly great pride which had gotten into the hearts of the people; and it was because of their exceedingly great riches and their prosperity in the land; and it did grow upon them from day to day.” (Hel. 3:36)

Just a few months before the death of the Prophet Joseph Smith, he met with the Twelve Apostles to talk about the greatest needs the Church was facing in that very difficult time. He told them, “We need the temple more than anything else.” (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith (2007), 416)

Valentina Baptism, Zone Conference & Temple!

This was a very busy week filled with many great activities. On Tuesday, we drove 1hr 10min to Porto and then road a bus for 4hr with E/S Frank & Darlene Ramsey to Lisbon. We arrived in time to have a meal with all the senior missionaries in our mission. There are 22 of us!

Wednesday, was a Sisters Conference in the morning then we went to the temple at 12:30PM. After the temple we returned to Porto on a very hot 4hr 30min train ride. Thursday was Zone Conference and Saturday was the first convert baptism in Vila Real since at least 2020.

Next to us are E/S Reed & Marcia Mecham; E/S Stan & Brenda Benedict; E/S Bruce & Debbie Seibold; E/S Daniel & Dianne Erickson; E/S Brian & Jennifer Bremner; E/S Frank & Darlene Ramsey.

In addition to the 7 couples (in the above photo) that serve throughout Portugal, there are 4 couples that are temple missionaries.

E/S Duffles; Benedict; Us; Seibold; Mecham; Bremner; Erickson; McMillan; Wilcox; Brown; Ramsey

Sisters Conference reminded me of a cruise! It was very well done!

After our hot train ride we went to dinner with E/S Brian & Jennifer Bremner. They are from Panguitch, Utah and serve on the Island of Terceira.

Zone Conference in Porto with about 70 missionaries.

Valentina Néves Rendall, was baptized on Saturday (7/16) by her son in law Ricardo Cardoso. Her face glowed!

President Barcellos performed the confirmation.

English class from June 14th-Valentina and her husband Antonio

Elder Williams on June 14th teaching one of the first lessons to Valentina and Antonio.

There were 28 people that attended the baptism. The most in a Sacrament meeting has only been 26. We had a potluck meal after the baptism.

SCRIPTURE POWER

In Mosiah 9-10 Mormon, includes a first person direct quote from Zeniff. He mentions that he saw good among the Lamanites but describes only the bad: “Now they were a lazy and an idolatrous people; therefore they were desirous to bring us into bondage, that they might glut themselves with the labors of our hands; yea, that they might feast themselves upon the flocks of our fields” (Mosiah 9:12)  “They were a wild, and ferocious, and a blood-thirsty people,“ (Mosiah 10:12)

Interestingly,  Zeniff had been part of a Nephite faction that intended to take back their former land by force. Assigned to spy on the Lamanite armies to determine an attack strategy, Zeniff saw that there was good among the Lamanites, and desired that his leader withdraw his military objectives and instead make a treaty. For advocating this alternative view, Zeniff was condemned to death. His rescue came at a terrible price, leaving the greater part of the group dead; a surviving few (fifty) returned to Zarahemla (Mosiah 9:1–2; Omni 1:27–30).

Zeniff says:  “I saw that which was good among them” (Mosiah 9:1) Perhaps, he is referring to the good that Jacob, had earlier described:  “they have not forgotten the commandment of the Lord, which was given unto our father—that they should have save it were one wife, and concubines they should have none, and there should not be whoredoms committed among them… Behold, their husbands love their wives, and their wives love their husbands; and their husbands and their wives love their children” (Jac. 3:5, 7)

Interestingly, his son Noah does just the opposite.

“And now it came to pass that Zeniff conferred the kingdom upon Noah, one of his sons; therefore Noah began to reign in his stead; and he did not walk in the ways of his father.
For behold, he did not keep the commandments of God, but he did walk after the desires of his own heart. And he had many wives and concubines. And he did cause his people to commit sin, and do that which was abominable in the sight of the Lord. Yea, and they did commit whoredoms and all manner of wickedness.” (Mosiah 11: 1-2)

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland has said: “It’s a very thin pancake that doesn’t have two sides” phrased also as: “No matter how thin the pancake, it always has two sides.”

We are blessed to see that which is good among the people of Portugal!
