Vila Real is a city of about 50,000 people but it feels much larger with a 2 story mall including 2 floors of underground parking. There are several walking paths + wide sidewalks throughout the city. This week we noticed numerous rock walls on our morning walks.
A Gabion wall is a retaining wall made of stacked stone-filled gabions tied together with wire. Gabion walls are usually battered (angled back towards the slope) rather than stacked vertically.
Here is a gabion wall next to poured concrete.
The local mall includes this gabion wall which is about 30’ high
This is from a home under construction.
This home is adjacent to the mall and surrounded by commercial construction.
This is how they dispose of cigarettes. They are extinguished on the right and deposited in the left container.

SCRIPTURE POWER
Today while studying 1 Ne. 17 was reminded of the difference in perspective between Nephi and his older brothers Laman & Lemuel. Nephi: “we did travel and wade through much affliction in the wilderness; and our women did bear children in the wilderness. And so great were the blessings of the Lord upon us.” (1 Ne. 17: 1-2) “notwithstanding we had suffered many afflictions and much difficulty, yea, even so much that we cannot write them all, we were exceedingly rejoiced when we came to the seashore” (1 Ne. 17: 6)
Laman & Lemuel: “Behold, these many years we have suffered in the wilderness, which time we might have enjoyed our possessions and the land of our inheritance; yea, and we might have been happy.” (1 Ne. 17:21)
Hopefully, during our time in Portugal we will be happy/rejoice and think about our great blessings instead of feeling bad for the various changes in routines and convenances we enjoyed in the land of our inheritance.
