Braganca Castle, cheesecake & fire station

This week after District meeting we toured the Braganca Castle. Built in 1128 it is a well preserved medieval castle located high on a hill in the historic center of Braganca.

After District meeting we had lunch and all the missionaries ordered a version of the famous Francesinha which has layers of sausage, ham and steak wrapped in cheese and topped with a special sauce.

On Sunday the Braganca Branch President Silverio and his wife invited us to lunch. They own a health food store and live in an apartment located below. This is their store.

Casa Lapao is known as the oldest and best bakery for cheesecake and other sweets. It was started in 1926 and is run today by the daughter of the founder.

The above photo is of the original island used since 1926. The boy is 26 years old and arrived one day ago from France. He speaks English but not Portuguese. He asked the owner if he could work in exchange for a place to sleep.

This is the owner. The photo on her left is when she was a young girl.

This is a similar phrase as “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”

This church was closed but located behind it is the fire station. We were given a nice tour which included several antique fire engines and an ambulance.

English class this week had 11 in attendance.

The students love their very animated teacher!

SCRIPTURE POWER

Jacob speaks 4 times about “anxiety”. Webster’s 1828 Dictionary states: “concern or solicitude respecting some event, future or uncertain, which disrupts the mind, and keeps it in a state of painful uneasiness.”

At the start of his 2 day sermon he states: “I am desirous for the welfare of your souls. Yea, mine anxiety is great for you; and ye yourselves know that it ever has been.” (2 Ne. 6:3)

In a later talk at the temple he states: “I this day am weighed down with much more desire and anxiety for the welfare of your souls than I have hitherto been.” (Jac. 2:3)

Finally, he teaches us to be careful and that we can lose the Spirit by having “over anxiety”. “..if I do not, by any means, get shaken from my firmness in the Spirit, and stumble because of my over anxiety for you.” (Jac. 4:18)

Zeniff was “over-zealous” (Mosiah 7:21) Alma “began to be very sorrow-ful; nevertheless the Spirit of the Lord did not fail him.” (Alma 4:15)

Elder Dallin H. Oaks said: “ But weakness is not our only vulnerability. Satan can also attack us where we think we are strong—in the very areas where we are proud of our strengths. He will approach us through the greatest talents and spiritual gifts we possess. If we are not wary, Satan can cause our spiritual downfall by corrupting us through our strengths as well as by exploiting our weaknesses.” (“Our Strengths Can Become Our Downfall”, Ensign, Oct. 1994)
